Velov Conference 2024: A Fresh Perspective on Education
On November 18, we will take a moment to reflect on eight inspiring and enriching years. During a studio broadcast, we will look back with some students and teachers at what we learned and what we will take with us for the future. We also launch a publication and a tool for quality deployment of international learning experiences. Stella Nyanchama Okemwa brings inspiration on decolonization. Nic Balthazar leads you through the well-filled program.
Get inspired by these eduSHAREs!
COIL: exchange between teacher training in Belgium and Cambodia
Since 2022, we have been supporting teacher educators through tailor-made processes. As was proven recently in an exchange between Artevelde University College, Belgium and Provincial Teacher Training Centres in Cambodia, lower middle-income countries can teach many lessons in education to high income countries. While much of the learning and dialogue will happen online, an in-person workshop took place in Ghent, Belgium, in February 2023 to kick off the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) component led Cambodian teachers Chinda Lay and Phannha Chea.
Six student teachers search for international education inspiration
In a month's time, six teacher trainees from Howest, Artevelde, and VIVES (three Universities of Applied Science) will go on international internships to Cambodia, Zambia and South Africa. In December, we got them ready during a training day. With eNSPIRED we believe that the Flemish educational field can also learn from countries in Asia, Africa and South America, that is why we asked the students to develop an eduSHARE!
Publication | 8 years of eNSPIRED: an overview
In this publication, we are looking back at the achievements of the eNSPIRED programme over the past few years. Since 2014, we have been organising workshops, seminars and learning weeks for teacher trainers, educations advisers and (future) teachers with education experts from countries in Africa, Asia and South America. During their internships abroad, we motivate students, teachers and educational advisors to look for interesting teachers practices that can boost Flemish policy and practice on equity in education.
Professional learning communities: sharing knowledge and learning together
On 21 October 2021, eNSPIRED organised a webinar on professional learning communities (PLCs). During this webinar, the results of an international review study were presented by Dong Nguyen and Ellen Boeren of Glasgow University. Nathalie Aziza from VVOB in Rwanda, Paul Mphisa from VVOB in South Africa and Brenda Akite Otika from STiR Education shared inspiring practical stories, each story focusing on a specific aspect of professional learning communities.
Webinar 'Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)'
On 21 October, you can participate in a webinar on professional learning communities (PLCs) where the results of an international literature study will be presented together with practical stories.
Multilingualism: a story of many people
Multilingualism in education. A story of many people. A topic that creates new challenges and new insights in all corners of the world. In November 2020, experts from Vietnam, South Africa and Belgium met virtually to exchange knowledge, experiences and inspiration.
Digital Learning week 2020 'Multilingualism, an asset in education'
Due to the coronavirus our learning week in March 2020 was cancelled. Therefore, we organise a fully digital learning week in November. The theme - multilingualism - and our international guests from South-Africa & Vietnam remain the same. More information will follow soon on this page.
'Multilingualism is not a threat'
From 17 to 21 February it was Language Diversity Week at the Artevelde University of Applied Sciences in Ghent. Multilingualism is eNSPIRED’s annual theme. That is why we were present on Wednesday 19 February at the Artevelde University of Applied Sciences with a whole delegation of international colleagues. We organised an inspiring language carousel about how other countries deal with multilingualism.
“If SDG4 is about inclusion, it needs a multilingual approach”
Kathleen Heugh is an international expert in bilingual and multilingual education with the University of South Australia. Ms Heugh was the keynote speaker at our international guest lecture on multilingualism and we listened intently. Here are just a few of the take-aways about current pressing linguistic issues in education.
Learning across borders about multilingualism
On November 13, 2019, teachers, teacher trainers and students gathered at our international guest lecture in Ghent. They learned about the positive effects of multilingualism in education and about how to integrate mother tongues in their classrooms.

eNSPIRED on the European map
eNSPIRED has steadily made a name for itself in the Belgian education system. With the organisation of guest lectures and learning weeks, the programme puts important equity issues on the education agenda. We introduce Belgian teacher trainers to good equity practices from different corners of the world, and stimulate them to integrate these inspirational customs in the curriculum of teacher training institutions. An ambitious goal that caught the eye of the organisers of the GENE award.
The importance of eNSPIRED on a European level
Leen Van Craesbeek is the head of the teacher training bachelor’s degree in primary education and the anchor figure for internationalisation at the Belgian university college Hogeschool Vives in Bruges. In November 2018, she flew to Lisbon to present the eNSPIRED-programme to an international audience at the GENE Conference. We caught up with Leen at the eNSPIRED learning week to chat about her experience.
Multilingualism, from challenge to trump
After a school year full of gender and (inter)national exchange, the gender challenges in education have few secrets left for us. With the necessary tools, we can prepare the new generation of teachers to ban gender stereotypes from the classroom. It is time now to clear the road and expose another challenge in our education system. With drum roll, we are announcing the theme for the 2019-2020 academic year, where we delve into multilingualism in education together.
“Gender is not a Cambodian or Rwandese issue, but a global one"
After months of preparations the time has finally come for our friends from Cambodia and Rwanda to take a flight to the capital of Europe for our international learning week on gender and education. Look back on an inspiring week on how to tackle gender disparities in education around the globe.
Flying to Cambodia, an open view at the world
Céline Sercu is a teacher educator and pedagogue at Howest University of Applied Science and is committed to internationalisation. In her free time, she enjoys travelling and professionally she seizes every opportunity to look at the world with a mind as open as possible. Together with the eNSPIRED team, she went to Cambodia in preparation for the international learning week on gender: “For me, going abroad means breaking your proverbial glasses and realising that your way of looking is coloured by your own experiences and pre-knowledge. This is exactly what we also try to impart the teachers of tomorrow at Howest.’’
Gender, more than a challenge
In March we receive our friends from Rwanda and Cambodia for the international learning week on gender and education. To prepare for this exchange, colleague Soetkin went to Rwanda together with Lien Van Eecke, teacher educator at VIVES University of Applied Sciences in Kortrijk and member of the eNSPIRED working group on gender, where they became acquainted with education specialists on site. The journey and the contrast between the two educational systems left a lasting impression on Lien. Read all about it in this travelogue.
Gender and education: two experts take the floor
During the international guest lecture on gender and education in Ghent on November 13, gender specialists madeleine kennedy-macfoy from Education International (EI) and Wendelien Vantieghem from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) were looking for a connection between these gender challenges.
Gender and education: international challenges under the microscope
Closing the door on 2018, the eNSPIRED team dives into the new year in which our gender adventure continues. Join us and our Rwandese and Cambodians friends on 20 and 21 March to reflect on gender challenges around the world and how to ban gender stereotypes from our classrooms. From vulnerability to gender
The smell of fresh flowers, children playing in fountains, packed terraces and smiling people everywhere… summer is just around the cornerhere ! The time of the year known by learners, teachers and school leaders as summer break, the end of the schoolyear and total complete and utter relaxation. With them, eNSPIRED too turns the page: it’s says its goodbyes to this year’s main theme ‘vulnerability in the classroom’ and turns the page to a new chapter:hello to ‘gender in the classroom”.
Vulnerability: “Similar challenges, but they seem miles ahead!"
For months we had been looking forward to the eNSPIRED learning week in April. Educational experts from Zambia and Surinam flew to Brussels to find solutions to the shared challenge of vulnerable learners in their societies. Belgian teacher trainers, (student) teachers and other educators also took a seat at that inspiration-filled table.
